Bill Smith was born in Carlisle and Educated at the Creighton School in the City. He joined the Nat West Group and enjoyed a varied career that spanned 39 years. Initially working in Yorkshire and the Lake District he joined the International Division of the bank in 1971 moving to London in 1975 and had a 5 year spell in New York.
Bill returned to London in 1984 and after two years at the Staff College in Enstone Oxfordshire he again took up an appointment in the International Division where he developed the banks European Strategy and was on the board of Nat West’s subsidiaries in Paris and Milan.
Following his retirement from NatWest in 2000 Bill then spent a total of seven years working in football as a director of both Oxford United and Bristol Rovers in addition to his involvement on various Football league committees. In 2007 Bill’s career took yet another turn when he invested in STL Communications and took up a position as an Executive Director of that company with specific responsibility for Finance.
